OCD Q&A

What is OCD?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition that involves unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions) that are often performed to reduce anxiety or distress. OCD can be overwhelming, exhausting, and deeply isolating — but healing is possible.

At Dreavita, our team understands that OCD presents differently for everyone. We provide evidence-based, trauma-informed therapy to help clients build awareness, reduce compulsive patterns, and reclaim their sense of freedom, agency, and peace.

What can OCD look like?

OCD is not always about hand-washing or checking the stove. It can involve a wide range of intrusive thoughts, fears, and behaviors. Some clients may experience:

  • Persistent fears about contamination, harm, or morality

  • A need for things to feel “just right” or perfectly ordered

  • Frequent checking, counting, or mental reviewing

  • Compulsions around relationships (e.g., fear of not loving someone enough)

  • Religious or existential obsessions (scrupulosity)

  • Intrusive thoughts that feel disturbing or out of character

  • Avoidance behaviors that interfere with daily life

  • Exhaustion from masking or hiding symptoms

OCD often begins in adolescence or young adulthood, but it can emerge at any age — and it frequently goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, especially among women, BIPOC, and LGBTQIA+ individuals.

What contributes to OCD?

There is no single cause of OCD. Research suggests a combination of genetic, neurological, environmental, and trauma-related factors. Stress, perfectionism, and other mental health conditions (like anxiety or depression) may also contribute to OCD symptoms. Many people with OCD also identify as neurodivergent or experience overlapping concerns like ADHD.

How is OCD diagnosed?

Our team offers comprehensive, virtual mental health evaluations that explore your experiences, thought patterns, behaviors, and overall well-being. We take a collaborative, nonjudgmental approach to understanding how OCD affects your life — and how we can support your goals for change.

How does Dreavita treat OCD?

We create personalized treatment plans based on each client’s needs, values, and learning style. Our team draws from evidence-based methods proven to help with OCD, including:

  • Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

  • Trauma-informed counseling

  • EMDR (for trauma-related OCD symptoms)

  • Mindfulness and somatic techniques

  • Relationship or family support

  • Art and expressive therapies

  • Executive functioning and emotional regulation coaching

  • Lifestyle and wellness strategies

  • Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP) through vetted clinical partners
